Prevent Your Pipes from Freezing
Here at Mena Plumbing, we receive a higher volume of calls in the Bryan/College Station area during the winter. While it is rare, it is essential to prepare for hard freezes here.
Cracked and burst pipes are common during the winter time. Once your pipes thaw, you will be able to notice if there are any problems. Here are a few tips to prevent your pipes from freezing.
Wrap All Exposed Pipes
First and foremost, make sure to wrap all exposed pipes located outside or in unheated areas of your home. Without proper insulation, all pipes, hose bibs and sprinklers that are exposed to the outside elements are vulnerable to freeze.
Many people wrap a towel or newspaper around exposed pipes believing that this will be enough to keep them freezing. However, this is not the case. The best item to use that will cover and insulate outdoor fixtures is polyethylene foam insulation. It is a foam wrap that will completely cover your pipe and protect it from the elements.
Keep the Heat On
Make sure to keep the heat on in your house or property. Heat can help prevent your pipes from freezing. If pipes freeze and burst, it can cause a lot of water damage to your property and your possessions.
You don’t have to keep the heat on as high as your normally would keep it if you are out-of-town. However, keep it above 55°F. This will provide enough heat to keep the pipes warm and prevent any water inside your home from freezing.
Allow Faucets to Drip
If you are afraid your pipe will freeze, allow the faucet to drip slightly. This will relieve pressure in the system. If your pipe freezes, it is actually the pressure creation between the blockage and the faucet that will cause the pipe to burst.
In addition, keeping your faucet open will prevent this pressure from building up and thus, keep your pipe from bursting.
